Welcome to the new school year! We're off to a great start, and are happy to be sending out our first newsletter of the year This newsletter is an informal publication written for the friends and family of the students in Room 129. It is intended to keep you up-to-date on important dates, events, and new programs in our classroom- There will be approximately four issues per year.
Another year has begun1 and there are new faces in Room 129! We are happy to welcome four new students this year Sergei Whaley-Taub (8th grade), Sherry Hackman (6th grade), Chris Ransfer (6th), and David Hupf (6th) have all joined our classroom.
Sergei has brought his love for bowling to Room 129, hoping every morning that it's bowling day! Sherry loves swimming day the best, and from schedule time on Friday
mornings when she learns that it,s swimming day, she'll talk of nothing else. Chris is our neighborhood celebrity, and it seems every time we're in the neighborhood, there's someone waving, "Hi, Chris!" And, of course, our new recycling "all star" is David, who is on his way to terrific arm strength from crushing all those cans!
Returning this year is Steven Elliott (7th grade), Richard Watkins (7th grade), Latoya Lewis (8th grade), Cameron Bell (8th grade), and Jasmin Webster (8th grade)1 who is with us half-days this year
Thanks to everyone who has supported our growing
program! It's the collaboration of teachers, parents, support
staff and members of the community that help our students achieve
success. We know that this will be the best school year yet!
Unfortunately, Room 129 will not be participating in the school-wide Curriculum Night on October 9. However, we are inviting parents and guardians to a more informal "Curriculum Night" specifically for the students in Room 129, which is scheduled for Thursday, October 16th at 6:00 p.m. This event will be held at the Freedom Child Development Center in the Central District of Seattle.
This will be a potluck dinner event, and we hope
all who are involved in the lives of our students can come. More
information regarding this event will be coming soon.

The students in Room 129 are accessing their community
in a new way this year-they've joined the neighborhood health
club! The club we've joined is "Every Body Health and Fitness"
on Jackson, near Martin Luther King Jr.
Keith, the co-owner of "Every Body," has provided the students in Room 129 with complimentary health club memberships. It's a great opportunity for our students- Working out at a public health club is a way to generalize the skills learned in Physical Education. Using a neighborhood facility for physical conditioning increases the chance that our students will be part of their community when they are not in school. It's also a great opportunity to increase social skills, as a health club is typically a friendly environment where people meet and hang out.
Atmosphere in the club is terrific, with up-to-date
equipment, music and an aerobics room (not to mention a juice
and espresso bar). Bob, who works on Tuesdays when we visit, has
really made us feel welcome at the club visiting Every Body each
week is just another way to meet some of the needs of our students
while at the same time teaching them functional skills in another
setting. We are excited to the have been given the opportunity
to join the club! Thanks Every Body ,for your involvement in your
community !
